No-dig vegetable gardens

The no-dig vegetable gardening system is available to customers, as established by Ester in the early 1970’s.  This method incorporates various layers of organic materials (as outlined below) to provide an ideal growing medium that is rich in nitrogen and organic carbons.  75% of the soil medium is comprised of wheat straw and lucern hay, providing a great bank for moisture retention. The big advantage for urban vegetable gardeners is that this system requires little maintenance i.e. no back breaking shovelling, excessive weeding, and with water retention.

Your vegetable garden will break down over time through natural composting and worm action and will require a top-up in approximately twelve months time.  Kitchen Farmer provides ongoing maintenance programs and is available to assist you here.

Key Points:

  • The Newspaper, or geotextile base will prevent weeds and grasses from growing into your vegetable garden.
  • Lucerne is high in nitrogen that will become available to your vegetables as it breaks down.
  • Manure is also high in organic nitrogen which will help break down the carbons found in Lucerne hay and straw.
  • A rich top layer of compost provides the perfect foundation for a productive vegetable garden.
